Meeting of the members of the joint UNESCO/ICOMOS/ICCROM reactive monitoring missions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia

In the frames of the joint UNESCO/ICOMOS/ICCROM reactive monitoring missionon 25th of April, 2012 the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia and Vice-President of the Georgian National Commission for UNESCO, Mr. Davit Jalagania met with the members of the mission at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.

The issues concerning the implementation of recommendations with regard to the World Heritage monuments of Georgia were discussed at the meeting.

The first meeting of the coordinating working group of the project for improving management of the Historical Monuments of Mtskheta (Georgia)

On 23rd of April, 2012 the first meeting of the coordinating working group of the project "Improving management of the Historic Monuments of Mtskheta (Georgia)" was held at the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia. The mentioned project was financed in the frames of the "International Assistance "of the World Heritage Fund.  The project envisages improvement of management of the Historic Monuments of Mtskheta and it will be implemented by the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia.

The working group is comprised of the representatives from the Ministries of Culture and Monument Protection, Economy and Sustainable Development, Regional Development and Infrastructure, also the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia, Mtskheta Municipality, Patriarchate, ICOMOS and from the Secretariat of the Georgian National Commission for UNESCO. The Secretary General of the National Commission introduced to the working group recommendations of the World Heritage Committee on the Historic Monuments of Mtskheta.

The chairman of the National Council on Bioethics’ of Georgia became the member of UNESCO’s international Bioethics’ Committee (IBC)

The chairman of the National Council on Bioethics' of Georgia, Professor Givi Javashvili became the member of UNESCO's international Bioethics' Committee (IBC) for the term of four years (2012-2015)

UNESCO's international Bioethics' Committee (IBC) was established in 1993. It is the only advisory body within the United Nations System to engage in reflection of life sciences and their applications.

Georgia became once more vice-president of the Council of UNESCO International Bureau of Education (IBE)

On January 25-27, 2012 the 61st session of the Council of the International Bureau of Education (IBE) was held in Geneva. In the frames of the mentioned session, representatives of UNESCO Member States elected the President and Vice-presidents of the IBE council. Norway was reelected as a President while Georgia became once more the Vice- President of the Council for the coming 2 years (2012-2013) term.

Celebration of Anniversaries in 2012-2013 with which UNESCO could be associated

The 36th session of the General Conference of UNESCO has adopted the list of anniversaries which will be held worldwide in association with UNESCO in 2012-2013. The following three nominations proposed by Georgia have been included in this prestigious list:

  • The 300th anniversary of the printed edition of the epic poem"The Knight in the Panther's Skin"(the best medieval creation of Georgian poetry);
  • The 150th anniversary of the birth of Niko Pirosmani (great Georgian painter)
  • The 150th anniversary of the birth of Ekvtime Takaishvili (an outstanding Georgian scientist and public figure)

The concrete action plan and projects concerning the celebration of the events will be elaborated by the concerned Georgian authorities and presented to UNESCO in 2012.
