Historical Monuments of Mtskheta were granted enhanced protection by UNESCO

On December 8th and 9th, 2016, the Intergovernmental Committee for the protection of cultural property in the event of armed conflict held its 11th session, at UNESCO’s headquarters, in Paris. Among other points, the Committee examined the request made by Georgia for granting enhanced protection to the Historical Monuments of Mtskheta.

The 11th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, 28 November-2 December 2016, decided to inscribe  the Georgian nomination "Living Culture of the three writing systems of the Georgian alphabet" on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The World Heritage Committee of UNESCO decides to remove “Historical Monuments of Mtskheta” from the List of World Heritage in Danger

The 40th Session of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee was held on 13th July, 2016 in Istanbul. The Committee adopted an important decision for Georgia, which removed the Historical Monuments of Mtskheta from the List of World Heritage in Danger.

The 10th session of the Committee of UNESCO for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict held on December 10-11 in Paris, elected Georgia as Vice-President of the Committee.   It must be noted that Georgia has been elected as a member state of the Committee in 2013.
