On 13 October 2017, the Executive Board of UNESCO nominated the former French Minister of Culture, Audrey Azoulay to become the new Director General of the Organization.

30 of the 58 members of the Board voted for Audrey Azoulay's candidacy, who left behind her Qatari rival by 2 votes, leader in previous rounds of elections.

On 27-28 September 2017 a working meeting was held at the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia in the presence of the Advisory Bodies of the World Heritage Committee ICOMOS and IUCN, on the renewal of the Tentative List of World Heritage and the possibility of proposing the inclusion of new cultural and natural sites on UNESCO World Heritage List.
