On 21 February, UNESCO celebrates the International Mother Language Day. Since 1999, the involvement of the Organization in celebrating this Day emphasizes the importance of preserving linguistic diversity and promoting mother tongue-based education.

In 2018, UNESCO commemorates the International Mother Language Day along with the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which affirmed the inadmissibility of discrimination on the basis of language.

On February 21 2018, the International Mother Language Day was also celebrated in Georgia. A reception and an exhibition were held at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, where historical documents were displayed from archives of Georgia.
