Anniversaries

Since 1956, UNESCO is actively involved in commemorating Anniversaries of significant historical events and eminent personalities of Member States, in order to give them worldwide significance. Candidacies for new nominations are submitted to UNESCO every two years, for final approval by the General Conference.

2006-2007

  • 900th anniversary of the construction of the Gelati Monastery architectural complex and cultural center (2006)
  • 1500th anniversary of the construction of the Jvari Church (2007)

2010-2011

  • 100th anniversary of the birth of Vakhtang Chabukiani (choreographer and teacher, 1910-1992) (2010)
  • 150th anniversary of the birth of Vazha Pshavela (writer, 1861-1915) (2010)
  • 1000th anniversary of the beginning of the construction of Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (2011)

 2012-2013

  • 300th anniversary of the first printed edition of the Medieval Epic poem “Knight in the Panther’s Skin” (1712) (2012)
  • 150th anniversary of the birth of Niko Pirosmani (painter, 1862-1918) (2012)
  • 150th anniversary of the birth of Ekvtime Takaishvili (historian and archaeologist, 1863-1953) (2013)

2014-2015

  • 100th anniversary of the death of Akaki Tsereteli (poet and writer, 1840-1915) (2015)

2016-2017

  • 200th anniversary of the birth of Nikoloz Baratashvili (poet, 1817-1845) (2017)
  • 200th anniversary of German settlements in the South Caucasus Region (Migration of the Schwab Germans to Azerbaijan and Georgia) (2016)

2018-2019
