The 40th Session of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee was held on 13th July, 2016 in Istanbul. The Committee adopted an important decision for Georgia, which removed the Historical Monuments of Mtskheta from the List of World Heritage in Danger.
According to the Committee’s decision in 2009, the Site was included on the list of World Heritage in Danger and since then the Georgian Government has made considerable efforts to ensure its withdrawal of the List by executing all the recommendations made by the World Heritage Committee on this matter.
The experts of UNESCO’s World Heritage Center and ICOMOS, the main consultative organ for the implementation of the Convention on World Heritage, gave a positive appreciation of the measures undertaken by Georgia. After examination of the point, the 21 Member States of the Committee unanimously adopted the decision to remove the monuments from the List of World Heritage in Danger.
This success is the result of the efforts of various Governmental authorities of the Country to assure a good state of preservation of the site and constitutes an example of effective cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Commission for UNESCO, the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection and the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia.
