The 39th session of the General Conference of UNESCO (30 October - 14 November 2017) adopted the list of anniversaries which will be celebrated in 2018-2019 with the participation of the Organization.

The anniversary proposed by Georgia - "Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University" was also included in the list, implying that the event will be celebrated with the support of the United Nations for Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

This decision confirms the regional importance of the event and underlines the role played by the Tbilisi State University for the popularization and development of culture, education and science in Georgia and elsewhere.

It should be noted that the nomination was submitted to the Organization with the support of the National Commissions of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.

Another Georgian nomination, "Celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Birth of Marjory Scott Wardrop", has been included, with the support of the UK National Commission and the Bodleian Library of Oxford University, in the list of anniversaries which will be commemorated with the participation of UNESCO and will be celebrated in 2019.

Since 1956, UNESCO participates in the commemorations of historic events and in the anniversaries of eminent personalities celebrated by Member States in order to give them worldwide significance.

Every two years, Member States submit proposals (up to two nominations) to the Organization for the celebration of anniversaries to which UNESCO could be associated for the forthcoming biennium. The final approval of the nominations goes to the General Conference of the Organization, which decides on the basis of the recommendations of the Executive Board of UNESCO.
